1 Introduction
Urban surface temperatures vary sharply over short distances, and tree canopy is one of the few factors a city can change.

Each ten-point increase in canopy cover is associated with a 1.3 °C drop in afternoon surface temperature. The effect is strongest in dense districts and weakens where more than half the ground is already unpaved.

We combine satellite thermal imagery with street-level canopy surveys across 214 neighbourhoods over six summers. Each ten-point increase in canopy cover is associated with a 1.3 °C drop in afternoon surface temperature. Because the design is observational, we cannot rule out that cooler neighbourhoods were simply easier to plant.
